Debuting a new trailer during the IGN Summer of Gaming Stream on Friday, we got a further glimpse into this four-wheeled, feathery frolic and a release date. An element of pinball chaos in such situations would have been preferable: the strictness of the skill demand is unnecessarily po-faced for such a silly game concept. E3 2021: SkateBIRD Releases August 12th JNEWS SkateBIRD continues to look even more wonderfully ridiculous. Players can toggle the ability to push automatically when the ollie button is held down, merge the ollie button with flip tricks/grinds/grabs to reduce right-hand inputs, and alter the game speed to customize their experience however they. Getting lodged against furniture and jammed in corners is frequent and finicky, with your bird far too ready to fall over altogether. SkateBIRD features combined a series of accessibility-minded options to ease rapid inputs and hand travel. This is all thanks to Limited Run Games, who make and release physical edition copies for indie studios and publishers across multiple mainstream consoles. The workings of the air ollie are somewhat inscrutable and it just feels irritating to have to execute it. During today’s Limited Run Games’ Forever Physical live stream showcase, held as part of E3 2021, SkateBIRD was announced to be getting a physical edition for the Nintendo Switch and PS4. While the fundamentals of the gameplay work – you can navigate, you can do tricks – it isn’t nearly as fun as it looks and certainly can’t stack up to the Tony Hawk’s series, to which comparison is inevitable. The fantastic idea of mini real-world skateparks also falls flat in practice, with inspiration running short after the first level, and a rooftop park bringing little that reads as less than human-sized anyway. It really only adds confusion to the visual cues for traversing obstacles when your jump height is harder to grasp. The potential of wings to bring a lift to the formula is not realised, with the second ollie failing to introduce creativity to trick lines. Explore lots of bird-sized parks, with simple controls familiar to any pro skating tiny hawk. This content is headed to SkateBIRD on consoles as well, so if you want to whip out your Switch and kickflip with an owl while wearing rainbow-tinted sunglasses, you won’t have to wait long. The bad news is that while the ambition soars, the concept doesn’t exactly land. SkateBIRD shows new busy birdy skateboarding action in a Bedroom. Announced at the Wholesome Direct, the game will be getting an update today that adds a new playground-themed park, a playable crewmate from Among Us, and new Pride-themed outfits, though SkateBIRD creator Megan Fox tells us she “…just wanted gay clothes anyways and I’d added them a while ago, and then it accidentally lined up…” with both the month-long LGBTQ+ celebration and its coinciding Wholesome Direct. Limited Run Games is the industry-leading publisher and distributor of award winning collectors editions, rare video games, and merchandise for Nintendo. Some of those dollars have been spent on making the game even better. Those options, plus the universal appeal of becoming a double-jumping swallow who can freestyle (and fumble) across a series of duct-taped skate parks, have done a lot to help the game make numbers. It’s fun too! A few patches after launch, the game plays better than ever, and if you still find any of the controls to be frustrating, most of them can be adjusted in accessibility settings. That’s probably why, despite middling initial reviews and a lack of big publisher support, SkateBIRD is “on the cusp of making a million bucks” in profit. Skatebird is a cute and original arcade skating game supported by great music, but the skating itself is crude, the objectives are boring, and the camera is a regular hassle. Most of the games at the show might look niche to those whose definition of “an average and normal videogame” is a AAA shooter, but for the majority of people in the world (most of whom have never played The Last of Us or Halo in their lives), stuff like skateboarding birds wearing funny hats is a lot more inviting. This year’s Wholesome Direct just wrapped up, and like always, it made good on its promise of filling our hearts and minds with edgeless, universally appealing fun. As we wait for E3 2021 to begin tomorrow, IGN held a two-hour livestream.
